We have recently been invited to deliver a presentation on gambling-related harms as part of the Cumbria Youth Health Champions programme delivered by Health Talks.

This programme sees a selection of young people from several schools across Cumbria attend a two-day course focusing on a variety of issues that may impact a person’s health and wellbeing with the final outcome being a campaign focusing on one of the presented topics. For the first time gambling harms has been selected to be one of the subjects and our team delivered an overview of the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme to schools across Whitehaven, Millom and other parts of Cumbria.

This introduction looked at defining gambling and gambling harms, looking at techniques the gambling industry use in their advertising, the impacts of gambling harms, safe gambling messages and the help and specialist help and support available.  The subject of gambling harms was new to many of the students who took great interest in the presentation and we will be looking to support schools in attendance with their campaign around safer gambling going forward.

We will also be continuing to develop our relationship with Health Talks and be a permanent part of the programme moving forward.
